CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
General Rules: In life and in school, effective effort (working hard and using the right strategies) and integrity (holding yourself responsible to making good choices) lead to success. With that in mind, I expect you to:
- be respectful of yourself, others around you, our work, and our classroom.
- use class time efficiently.
- do your best.
iPads: Please have your iPad with you and ready to use every day. Make a habit of charging your iPad fully at home every night. Please respect the classroom routine of "iPads on" and "iPads off" so that you can always be engaged in the lesson. (See more in the purple iPad section below.)
Other Electronic Devices: Please PUT AWAY your cell phone, iPod, headphones, etc., when you enter the room. Having these devices out, even if you are not using them, can be a distraction from our important work.
Food and Beverages: Snacks, drinks, and candy are not allowed in the classroom (but please feel free to bring a water bottle) unless you have special permission to eat in class. Please respect the classroom space and the work we are doing by enjoying your food and drinks in the cafeteria during your free and lunch periods.
Starting Class: When you enter the classroom you should take your seat and begin the DO NOW exercise (posted on the class blog). I will begin class promptly according to the time shown on the classroom clock. If you enter the room without a pass after class has begun, you will be considered and marked tardy.
Attendance: It is important for you to be in class every day and on time. Please come to class prepared and limit requests to leave class. IMPORTANT: BHS has an attendance policy that imposes consequences for unexcused absences and tardies. Please review this policy carefully, as it will be enforced in this class. See your student handbook for detailed information.
Excused Absences and Makeup Work: In the event of excused absences, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to make up your work on time. You should check our blog for assignments and materials AND see me as soon as you return to discuss any questions you have about makeup work. According to BHS policy, you are entitled to twice the number of days you were out to make up the work you missed. For example, if you miss one day of school on Monday, you have two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) to finish the work you missed on Monday, so everything is due no later than Thursday. Every calendar day counts in your makeup time, including drop days, weekends, and vacations. In my past experience, I have found that students who make up their work earlier than this policy requires are most successful. Also, if you miss more than two consecutive days of school, you should get help from your teachers and guidance counselor to coordinate and prioritize your makeup work.
Preparedness and Contribution
I expect each student to come to class prepared to contribute. That means that you’ve not only completed any assigned reading or written work, but you’ve also thought about it carefully. You may have questions, connections, or ideas to share, and these make the learning experience more exciting, interesting, and relevant for you and your classmates. Please come to class ready and willing to make a positive contribution.
Extra Help: If you need help or have a question, please see me. I am available for extra help on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30 in room 108, or at other times by appointment.
EXPECTATIONS FOR ACADEMIC HONESTY
Collaboration: Please check with me before you work with a classmate on an assignment. Generally, discussing prompts and asking one another questions about homework or essays is okay, but composing answers together is not. The same goes for help from parents and tutors. Please be sure that the pen or keyboard stays in your hand, and the final product is your own work. I'm not interested in how well your tutor or cousin can write. I'd like to see what YOU can do, what you've learned, and what we still need to work on.
Use only approved sources: Avoid using online or other secondary resources such as Sparknotes for help with assignments. The assignments I give you are meant to measure and improve your skills and your ability to generate your own ideas, opinions, and inferences about literature. If you borrow ideas or words from another source, your work won’t give me the information I need to help you improve.
Prioritize Learning: In such a competitive and highly successful school district, we sometimes forget that learning is more important than grades. Please see me if you begin to feel overwhelmed by a task or a deadline so I can help you solve the problem. I want you to feel proud of the work you do and the choices you make.
Consequences: If you turn in work that has been done dishonestly, you will meet with me to discuss the choice you made. You will not receive credit for the assignment, and we will contact your parents. In some situations, you will face more serious consequences from your assistant principal, such as detention or suspension.
EXPECTATIONS FOR USING iPADS:
- Come to class with your charged iPad every day. If you forget your iPad, all work must be done with pencil and paper.
- Volume should be on SILENT at all times.
- Follow “On Time” and “Off Time” instructions.
- On Task = Right App
Examples of misuse of the iPad include but are not limited to:
- Using apps or websites inappropriate for school such as Facebook, Twitter, games, etc.
- Using the iPad for work other than the assigned subject’s classwork.
- Taking photos/videos of students/teachers unless instructed by the teacher to do so.
- Listening to music with or without headphones.
- Using iPad during “Off Time.”
